Medical School has never had a shortage of confession pages. In fact, it seems that one is popping up everyday in our times. However, we need to examine how these confession pages affect our student populous and whether or not they're actually necessary.
Confession pages should only serve one purpose: to share one's own experiences about things happening in their lives and share their feelings. However, the Confession pages we have act as gossip rags. They are used to defame and slander our colleagues. Instead of being used for what they are stated for; to confess; they are being used to gossip about people, create rumors and contribute to meaningless and harmful conversations.
We can say that this is the work of a population of students who don't care about the effects that their words have on others. However, one can also say that this is the work of irresponsible admins because the admin gets to pick and choose exactly what they post on those pages. These admins care very little to moderate what they post on their page. The admins claim to not post things that will not reveal people's identities but they continue to do so.
People are no longer confessing their own sins on the page, instead, they are spreading rumors about others, they are throwing insults and debasing others. The confession pages have become a place for cowards to drag others down and say wild things that they would never be able to say in person. For an admin who claims to have created the page to create a safe space, they still don't moderate the page and post carelessly. The admin seems to not care about creating a safe space, but rather, they are just thirsty for likes and engagements.
It is quite clear that the admin cares very little about the people who are confessing/ the very real impact these "confessions" have on the people who read them. The Confession page was never intended to be a safe space at all, but rather a place to gossip and incite drama. It is a place where people can say absolutely egregious things about people, things they wouldn't dare say in person.
So the question stands: are these confession pages really necessary? Especially in circumstances where they only act as harbingers of unnecessary drama and often, a version of cyber bullying?
